Born September 30, 1946, Jim lived a life filled with service, leadership, and devotion to family and community. Jim’s Role at Blackburn Manufacturing

Jim carried forward the family legacy at Blackburn Manufacturing with vision and determination. He served as president, guiding the company through decades of growth while never losing sight of the personal relationships at its core. His leadership style was marked by respect—whether for employees, customers, or vendors—and by his ability to inspire those around him.

Jim’s contributions did not go unnoticed. He was recognized as the Small Business Person of the Year fro Nebraska in 1994 and later received the Nebraska Distinguished Entrepreneur Award in 2003. These honors reflected his unwavering commitment to excellence and the way he positioned Blackburn as both a strong company and a family-rooted business.

Commitment to Family and Community

Jim was the very definition of a family man. He believed Blackburn should remain a family business, ensuring it carried forward the values of hard work, integrity, and care for others. He supported and invested deeply in his hometown of Neligh, Nebraska—not just through the company, but through countless hours of community service.

For more than 45 years, he was a member of the Neligh Chamber of Commerce. He served on the Neligh Fire Department for 15 years, contributed to the Neligh-Oakdale Educational Foundation, sat on the Antelope Memorial Hospital Board, and was active in the Neligh Economic Development Board. His service extended further through 40 years of membership in the American Legion.

Personal Legacy and Values

Beyond business, Jim lived a life with joy and purpose. He was a pilot from the time he was a teenager, a Navy officer, and a man who loved flying, reading, traveling, and riding his motorcycle.

Jim’s values—loyalty, service, and perseverance—were instilled in his family, who remember him as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He led by example, showing that leadership is not only about business growth but also about lifting others up.
