What is the difference between detectable and non-detectable warning tape?
Detectable tape has an aluminum foil core that locates with a standard cable locator. Non-detectable tape is polyethylene only. Non-detectable rolls are used above non-metallic lines where locating is not needed. Detectable rolls are used above metallic or non-metallic lines that need to be found later.
What color should warning tape be?
Standard APWA color codes: red for electric, yellow for gas and oil, blue for potable water, green for sewer, orange for telecom, purple for reclaimed water, white for proposed excavation, and pink for temporary survey markings.
How deep should warning tape be buried?
Most utilities bury warning tape 12 to 24 inches above the line. Local codes vary, so check your municipal specification before installation.
