The flag of our great nation was first adopted when Congress passed a resolution on June 14, 1777.
2) How many stars and stripes are there, and what do they represent?
Here is an easy one for you in case the last one was tricky! The American flag has 50 stars and 13 stripes. The stars represent the 50 states, and the stripes represent the 13 original colonies.
3) Under which president was Flag Day officially designated as June 14?
Thanks to a proclamation by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916, Flag Day became a nationally observed event. However, it wasn’t until 1949, under President Harry Truman, that an Act of Congress officially designated June 14 as National Flag Day.
4) How many designs has the American flag seen?
27! The current design of the U.S. flag is its 27th version and the longest-used!
5) Who designed the first American flag?
Famed seamstress Betsy Ross often receives credit for creating the American flag. However, many experts believe that the true designer of the first rendition was founding father Francis Hopkinson. Appointed to the Continental Navy Board in 1776, Hopkinson is thought to have worked on the flag’s design during his tenure.
6) When was Neligh named the flag capital of Nebraska?
Thanks in large part to Blackburn, Neligh has proudly held the title of Flag Capital of Nebraska since 2015. Each year on June 14th, the town bursts into a vibrant display of American flags. Volunteers from the community and Blackburn Manufacturing team up to place high gloss poly American flags throughout the town. These small and colorful vinyl flags are even arranged along Highway 275, which runs through the heart of Neligh!

Flying an American flag at half-staff indicates a period of mourning or respect for a national tragedy or the death of significant individuals.
